This document describes several procedures and best practices for the Connected® EmailOptimizer® feature of the version 7.x and 8.x Agent for Microsoft® Outlook. The Connected EmailOptimizer feature supports the following versions of Microsoft Outlook in ANSI and Unicode modes:
For more information about the Connected EmailOptimizer feature, refer to the Connected Backup documentation.
Registry Keys and Permissions
To ensure a successful backup of .pst files using the Connected EmailOptimizer feature, follow these best practices.
-
Be sure the users have Full Control permission for the following Windows registry keys and their subsequent keys. The keys are the same for Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Microsoft® Windows Vista™ operating system.
When a user is logged on to the Agent computer, be sure the user has Full Control permission for the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles
When a user is logged off the Agent computer, be sure the user has Full Control permission for the following key
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles
For example, an end user appears in the permission list but does not have Full Control permission for the key. If the end user is a member of the Admin group, sometimes the Admin group does not have Full Control permission to this key.
-
Check the permissions for the .pst file you want to back up with the Connected EmailOptimizer feature.
-
If you set up the permissions correctly, and you still cannot back up the .pst file, open the .pst file in Outlook before you run a backup.
If you cannot expand the folders or open the .pst file in Outlook, run the Index Repair tool (Scanpst.exe) on the .pst files before you back them up with the Connected EmailOptimizer feature. The Index Repair Tool allows you to repair a .pst file. For details about using the tool, refer to Microsoft knowledge base article 934545.
Connected Backup 8.2 SR1 Disk Space Requirements
Connected EmailOptimizer consumes disk space on each computer that is at least twice the size of all .pst or .nsfs file on the computer. The exact amount of disk space that EmailOptimizer consumes depends on the number and size of email attachments in the .pst or .nsf files. Before you deploy Connected EmailOptimizer, evaluate the average size of .pst or .nsf files in your user community to ensure that there is sufficient disk space for current and future use.
Unique email attachments consume more disk space on the Data Center because Connected EmailOptimizer completes a full back up for each file to protect it. Shared attachments (duplicate attachments backed up by multiple users in a community) consume less disk space because Connected EmailOptimizer backs up only one copy of shared email attachments for users in the Data Center to share.
Email Constituent Files Folder
The Agent uses the email constituent files folder to analyze email files for back up and retrieve functions. The folder location varies, depending on the version of Connected Backup.

Connected Backup 8.2 SR1 CompoundFileAnalyzer
CompoundFileAnalyzer (CFA) and the Agent analyze and rebuild email files. To ensure that the Agent communicates with the Data Center servers and that the Agent interface functions, exclude port 16392 from anti-virus blocking.
