Iron Mountain Digital has identified a problem involving the Agents for Connected Version 7.5.3 Hotfix 6 (HF6) and Connected Backup Versions 8.2 Service Release 1 (SR1) and 8.2 Service Release 1 Hotfix 1 (SR1HF1). The problem is seen after the restoration of *.PST (Microsoft Outlook) Personal Store files that have been backed up using the EmailOptimizer. This problem does not affect IBM Lotus Notes *.NSF mail files or any other file type.
When you restore any EmailOptimized Outlook mail file using these Agent versions, the Agents will incorrectly mark all email messages with attachments (including email messages with Word documents, Power Point presentations, and so on) as being in ‘draft mode’. This happens even if the email messages weren’t in ‘draft mode’ at the time the Outlook mail file was originally backed up. This problem only affects the restored Outlook mail file on the client machine. The saved version on the Data Center is not affected. This problem only occurs when an Outlook mail file is retrieved. No other modification to the mail file or attachments are made by the affected Agent. Outlook mail files that are not specifically retrieved by the affected Agent will not be modified.
Backups of Outlook mail files with ‘draft mode’ messages will be committed to the DataCenter in ‘draft mode.’ Any subsequent retrieval of these mail files will display these affected emails in ‘draft mode'. This is because the state of the email messages at the time of the backup of these retrieved files was in 'draft mode'.
This problem is resolved with Connected DataProtector 7.5.3 HF7 and Connected Backup 8.2 SR2.
The 7.5.3 HF7 and 8.2 SR2 Agents will prevent this from occurring on restored Outlook mail files. However, files that were restored previously using Agent versions 7.5.3 HF6 or 8.2 SR1 / SR1HF1 will not be able to be restored to their original state. The emails that were changed to ‘draft mode’ will remain in ‘draft mode’.
Example
| Activity Date |
Event |
| 7-2-2008 |
User backs up Outlook mail file with Connected Backup Agent |
| 7-2-2008 |
User Agent upgraded to 7.5.3 HF6 or 8.2 SR1 / SR1HF1 |
| 7-3-2008 |
Hard drive crashes, and the 7.5.3 HF6 or 8.2 SR1 / SR1HF1 Agent is recovered. The Outlook mail file is restored, which sets all emails with attachments to ‘draft mode’ status |
| 7-6-2008 |
User Agent 7.5.3 HF6 or 8.2 SR1 / SR1HF1 backs up Outlook mail file, committing ‘draft mode’ emails to Data Center |
To avoid the ‘draft mode’ issue, upgrade the user’s Agent to version 7.5.3 HF7 or 8.2 SR2, and then retrieve the Outlook mail file saved on July 2. This Outlook mail file represents the most current version of the file that was not backed up by the affected Agent.
To prevent future occurrences of this issue, upgrade those Agents using versions 7.5.3 HF6 or 8.2 SR1 / SR1HF1 to Agent versions 7.5.3 HF7 and 8.2 SR2 or later.
