This document explains how to recover a Server Agent account that initially registered using a standard registration code and password pair.

Description of the Problem

In the event of a failure on a user's computer, such as loss of the hard disk or loss of the entire computer, it is necessary to recover the Agent account before it is possible to restore backed-up data. The user can reinstall the Agent on the same or a new computer and recover the original account. This process is called account recovery.

You should only recover an account onto a new computer if the account will no longer be used on the old computer. Remember that an account must only be used on one computer at a time.

Preparing for Agent Recovery

To recover an existing Agent, you need the following information:

  • The Account number associated with the Agent that you want to recover. You can use the Account Search screen in Support Center to display account numbers. Refer to Support Center Help for details about searching for accounts.
  • A technician ID and password.
  • Ensure that you have the same software version of the Agent you last used.

Procedure

Use the following steps to recover an account that was originally registered using a registration code and password pair:

  1. Using Windows Explorer or a Command Prompt window, navigate to the folder where you installed the new Agent Setup executable.
  2. Do one of the following:
  • Double-click the .msi file. This action starts the Agent Setup.
  • Enter the following command:

        C:\> msiexec /i dataprotectorsv

  1. Follow the instructions that the Agent Setup displays. After installation completes, the Agent Setup opens the Agent user interface and displays the Account Registration screen.
  2. Select Existing Account and click Next.
  3. In the Account Recovery screen, enter the Account number, the Technician ID, and the associated password and click Next. The password is case sensitive.
  4. When registration is complete, click Finish. If a computer restart is not required, the Agent performs the actions specified during installation. If a computer restart is required, one of the following occurs:
  • If you specified that you want to restart the computer immediately after registration, the Agent displays the Close Open Applications screen. After closing all open applications, click Restart. If you click Cancel, the computer does not restart. You must restart the computer manually. Backups do not start until the restart completes.
  • If you specified that you want to restart the computer at a later time, the registration completes. You must restart the computer manually. Backups do not start until the restart completes.

After recovery

After you reinstall the Agent and recover your account, you can retrieve files or use the Heal feature as needed to recover missing files. Make sure you retrieve all necessary files before performing a backup with your recovered Agent.
